Mid-morning report: stocks up on U.S. data

The TSX composite was higher, rising 66.89 points to 12,337.32 in mid-morning trading on Thursday. The Dow was up 75.70 to 14,752.00, while NASDAQ rose 27.98 to 3,297.63.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX: T.ABX, Stock Forum) posted US$923 million or 92 cents per share of adjusted earnings in the first quarter, down from US$1.1 billion or $1.10 per share. It was up 1.9% to $19.74 in mid-morning trading.

In the U.S. the Labour Department reported initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell by 16,000 to 339,000 in the week ended April 20.

Meanwhile, in Spain unemployment climbed to 27.2% of the workforce or six million people.

The price of gold increased US$24.07 to US$1,455.94 an ounce, while silver gained US$0.79 to U$23.98 an ounce.
