Mid-morning report: Stocks fall

The TSX composite was lower, falling 43.39 points to 12,662.99 in mid-morning trading on Wednesday. The Dow was down 40.51 to 14,520.78, while NASDAQ lost 4.19 to 3,248.35.

Ahead of a crucial shareholder vote, advisory firm Glass Lewis advised its clients to back all 12 of Agrium Inc.’s (TSX: T.AGU, Stock Forum) board nominees over a slate nominated by dissident investor Jana Partners.

Cyprus banks are due to reopen on Thursday, after completing capital control measures on Wednesday to prevent a run on the banks by depositors.

The price of gold rose US$6.60 to US$1,602.30 an ounce, while silver slipped US$0.18 to U$28.49 an ounce.
