U.S. hedge fund Jana Partners LLC has mailed a new letter to Agrium Inc. (TSX: T.AGU, Stock Forum) (NYSE: AGU, Stock Forum) shareholders, telling them to vote for its board nominees ahead of the company’s annual shareholders meeting on April 9, 2013.

Jana's proposed slate includes independent directors who would bring much needed experience and a very clear shareholder mindset to the board,’’ Jana said in a press release.

The move comes just days after Agrium released its own statement reminding shareholders to vote for the Agrium nominees and saying it wanted to set the record straight on information published by Jana.

Agrium shares fell 1.6% on Monday to $101.26, leaving the company with a market cap of $15.1 billion, based on 149.4 million shares outstanding. The 52-week range is $116.38 and $77.50.
