Air Canada posts Q2 profit helped by tax gain

MONTREAL - Air Canada (TSX:AC.B) rose to a profit in the second quarter as the airline benefited from a $41-million tax gain.

The Montreal-based company says net income grew to $223 million, or 75 cents per share.

That compared to a loss of $23 million, or nine cents per share, a year ago.

Operating revenues grew to $3.3 billion from $3.06 billion in the comparable period.

Air Canada says its lower-cost Rouge carrier operations have exceeded expectations.

The company also noted that more U.S. and international passengers are using Air Canada for global travel, helped by efforts to make it easier for them to transfer from partner airlines at Canadian hubs.
