Not as well known is the story of the rabid alpha fox who thought he saw pine nuts on the ground and kept trying to snap at them. Hearing all the noise he was making, the other foxes gathered around him thinking that he had some special ability to find food, even though they couldn't see any. Being the alpha of the pack, his followers were sure he was on to something. Eventually they all starved to death waiting for the food that in reality didn't exist. To this day "nuts" is used to describe people who believe something that has no basis in  fact and cannot be seen or proven.
