After seven years of effort and investment of $ 50 million, orbite will finally launch the production at its plant in Cap-Chat alumina in early 2013.
Sixty people will work when the production will be launched. The company has developed a unique process to extract alumina from the basement of the Gaspé Peninsula.
The alumina produced at Cap-Chat will be sold mainly in Asia and the United States, especially for the manufacture of the lithium battery. In addition to its facilities in Cap-Chat, orbit is currently conducting a feasibility study to establish 10 other facilities in du Québec.
The project, which would require investments of $ 5 billion, telescoped on 10 to 15 years.
In addition, smelters in North America would no longer obliged to buy their alumina in Australia and the Brazil.
Orbit predicts that its future plants could generate up to 6 000 direct and indirect jobs.
