If I may, I certainly agree with parts of your post. But as you stated yourself, by doing so (trading) you did not only preserve your capital but you made it grow. You did more than just preserving it, what was the sentiment or the emotion that was driving you when you pressed that sell button for a 20% ROI on a buy/sell trade within  2/3 weeks scheme let say, were you not seing a good opportuny to make new money ? Wouldn't be more selling when you are in the red a real move driven by fear and capital preservation, justified or not?

Far from me the idea of comdemning that kind of behavior, trading to make a profit. Having more time I'll maybe do the same with a % of my portfolio, tracking high beta stock and playing more technicals and sentiments... why not.
