Falling Natural Gas Bets Cut as Chill Hits

Published: Jan 25, 2013

Money managers slashed their bets on falling natural-gas prices by 29% in the week ended Tuesday, according to CFTC data. The net-short position of hedge funds and other speculative investors in gas futures and options fell to 60,069 contracts from 84,462 contracts last week. The drop in short positions corresponded with a 3% rise in gas futures over the same period. But with futures slumping to end the current week, it's likely investors have already started piling back into bearish bets. Don't be surprised by a return of the bears in next week's data.
