Agriculture has been overlooked as an asset class for many years, other than by sophisticated, high net worth investors. The primary reason for this overall neglect is that until recently farm productivity has been able to keep pace with increasing demand. Food supply has just not been an issue. There are signs everywhere that this equilibrium is failing as the largest cohort of consumers in history begin to make the transition out of emerging economy standards of living. The new demand they create for agricultural commodities to be used as food, feed and fuel is unprecedented.

Western farm productivity growth averaged around 1.8% pa for the last 40 years, but only 1% pa over the last 10 years. This makes sense when you consider that much of our growth came from one-off boosts such as massive increase in inputs and farm mechanization. Another way to think about wheat exporting is to view it through this lense - due to the enormous water requirements of growing wheat, wheat exporting nations are implicitedly exporting water.
