TORONTO (SHfn) - East coast Canadian gold assays were welcome news for some shareholders Friday, while a biotech play was in the kill zone.
Orex Exploration (TSX: V.OX, Stock Forum) shares jumped 33% to eight cents on Friday after the micro cap miner announced additional gold assay results from the Phase 2 diamond drilling program on its wholly-owned Goldboro Gold Project in Nova Scotia, which included 46.46 grams per tonne (g/t) gold over 10.5 metres.
As well, shares of Intrepid Mines Limited (TSX: T.IAU, Stock Forum) soared 44% to 23 cents as the international precious metals producer, developer and explorer reported operating activities for the quarter ended December 31, 2008. Highlights included Paulsens gold production in Australia of 18,713 fine ounces, which was up 14% from the previous quarter. Also, gold revenue for the quarter was $10.3 million from the sale of 18,437 ounces.
Andean Resources (TSX: T.AND, Stock Forum), meanwhile, also announced operating activities for the quarter ended December 31, 2008. Highlights included completion of pre-feasibility study; demonstrating robust project economics with significant upside potential; initiated a bankable feasibility study based on revised project parameters targeting lower capital expenditures, extended mine life and increased IRR (Internal Rate of Return); and a quarter end cash balance of $28.7 million Australian dollars. Andean stock popped as much as 14% before closing up 5% to $1.15.
Shares of ALDA Pharmaceuticals (TSX: V.APH, Stock Forum) climbed 30% to 19.5 cents after the developer of infection-control therapeutics said that, in tests conducted at an independent laboratory in the U.S., its T36(R) Antiseptic Hand Sanitizer has been shown to kill the accepted test substitute for Norwalk virus, Feline Calicivirus, on contact and virtually eliminates the virus after five minutes.
And, BioMS Medical (TSX: T.MS, Stock Forum) Friday reported that results from MINDSET-01, an exploratory phase II clinical trial evaluating dirucotide in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, did not meet its primary endpoint, annualized relapse rate or associated secondary MRI endpoints. Its shares sank sank 30% to $2.39.
