Now on to the interview…
SH: How would you characterize your investing style?
DS: Long-term investor
SH: Where do you get your investing ideas from?
DS: TV (BNN), meetings, e.g., PDAC [Editor’s note: Reference to the Prospector’s & Development Association of Canada conference.]
SH: Explain what’s in your public portfolio on SH and why those securities are there; why did you choose those stocks?
DS: Mostly mining/exploration stocks, a lot of gold, some silver, some gas, some tech, a few gemstone companies, some exotic metals. I chose the companies because I have looked fairly extensively into the dealings and projects of each and liked what I saw. Some were recommended by friends/family.
SH: Does your portfolio indicate your true holdings, or do you use it more as a watch list?
DS: About 80% true holdings.

SH: What kind of performance have you had in your portfolio? Up, down, sideways?
DS: Down currently, with the pullback in gold.
SH: How do you feel about your portfolio performance?
DS: I have some gem companies, but I am disappointed with the poor performance of Canadian energy and energy-service trusts and the recently poor gold performance.
SH: Do you plan on making any changes to your portfolio in the near future? Addition or subtraction?
DS: Some of the big Canadian banks are interesting, particularly Bank of Montreal (TSX: T.BMO, Bullboard). Some oil & gas trusts are recovering swiftly.
SH: Do you see a value in having a public portfolio on SH? Do you find it helpful when judging a member’s contributions to the site?
DS: Not really as anyone can put whatever they want there and not actually be holding the stock.
SH: Is your portfolio weighted toward a particular sector / commodity / service / trend etc.? Why is that?
DS: Gold, gas, oil, base metals, and gems are all significant contributors.
SH: What do you think about the performance of the junior mining sector over the past year?
DS: Very, very poor. No credit available from the banks = not money in coffers = no exploration/development.
SH: Are there any new trends that you’re following that might influence your portfolio in the future?
DS: Coal and iron ore.
SH: Are there any Stockhouse members you like to follow to help you with your due diligence?
DS: deadlock seems like a very interesting poster.
SH: What has been your best investment to date?
DS: Cathedral Energy Trust (TSX: T.CET.UN, Bullboard).
SH: What has been your worst investment?
DS: Impax Energy Trust (TSX: T.MPX.UN, Bullboard).
SH: Any parting advice for new members joining Stockhouse?
DS: Please post only constructive comments. If you're going to post a blog, please tag only companies that the post is relevant to. If someone disagrees with your view, try to discuss it in the civil manner based on the merits of the positions, no name-calling please.
SH: Would you care to share your outlook for the global economy in the next few years?
DH: As China slows down, India, Brazil, Russia, South Africa, and Turkey will take up the slack.
That’s all for our interview! Again, feel free to leave comments, criticisms and suggestions in the comment box below, and look for another Portfolio Spotlight coming soon.
Special thanks to Diopside for participating.
