A shale oil acquisition generated plenty of speculator interest Wednesday, while a China auto play drove higher on financial results.

TORONTO (SHfn) - A shale oil acquisition generated plenty of speculator interest Wednesday, while a China auto play drove higher on financial results.

CabelTel International (AMEX: GBR, Bullboard) shares soared 48% to $5.19 on Wednesday after the company reported that, on May 9, 2008, it sold certain mineral interest leasehold rights in the Fayetteville Shale area of Arkansas to an unrelated third party for about $16 million in cash, and will record an after-tax gain of approximately $14.5 million.

As well, shares of Domestic Energy (OTO: DMEC, Bullboard) skyrocketed 867% to $1.45 as the oil and gas explorer announced that it has acquired the working interest and operating rights to more than 90 wells in Tennessee with Chattanooga Shale potential.

China Architectural Engineering (AMEX: RCH, Bullboard), meanwhile, posted first-quarter earnings of $5.2 million, or nine cents a share, compared with $1.7 million, or three cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Analysts expected earnings of three cents a share. China Architectural stock popped 39% to $8.26.

Shares of China Automotive Systems (NASDAQ: CAAS, Bullboard) powered 25% higher to $6.85 after the Chinese supplier of power steering systems and components announced a first-quarter profit of $4.4 million, or 18 cents a share, compared with $1.6 million, or seven cents a share, during the same period last year. Product sales for the quarter surged 46% to $41.5 million.

And, electric car maker ZAP (OTC:BB: ZAAP, Bullboard) Wednesday said its vehicles are now available in Visalia, California. Its shares jumped 12% to 75 cents.
